The Apple Page

“The loveliest of all fruits…is the apple.”

Over the years we have worked very closely with the professors at Rutger’s University. The plant breeding program at Rutger’s has developed many varieties of apples presently grown on our farm. Mollie’s Delicious, a popular late summer apple, is one that was developed by Dr. Hoff in 1966. At the height of the breeding programs we were considered the North Jersey test orchard for new varieties. Summergold and Summercrisp are two of those varieties and they are unique to our farm. These apples did not test well in South Jersey, but they did well in our orchard so we kept them, gave them names, and have popularized them at our retail stand. The most recent of apples to gain popularity as a “Rutgers” apple is the Suncrisp. Win Cowgill, professor at Rutgers and also a personal friend, has done extensive research with this apple and because of this has earned the nickname “Mr. Suncrisp”.

Did you know??

  • The apple is a member of the rose family.
  • The apple tree was originally found in Asia.
  • Apple blossoms have five petals and the center of the mature fruit contains five carpels arranged in a five point star.
  • Apples were brought to North America with colonists in the 17th century, and the first apple orchard on the North American continent was said to be near Boston in 1625.
  • The proverb “An apple a day keeps the doctor away.” dates from 19th century Wales and addresses the health effects of an apple, which are many. The latest is the presence of anti-oxidants–one half cup of apple cider equals the anti-oxidants found in a glass of wine.
  • The apple is the most popular fruit globally, having more trees in cultivation, and selling more fruit annually than any other fruit currently available.
